Blog Post: Too Good to be True, Or Just Used to Settling?
Music has always been there when you need it. You may not realize it until you hear a song and it’s talking about what you’re going through. Music makes you feel heard even if you have no one to talk to.
It has a way of saying the words, you can’t or don’t know how to say. Even if you’re not having the best day, music can help make it better.
One day I woke up in a bad mood and didn’t know why. I just went on about my day. As I started my commute to work, I realized that my normal Rap playlist wasn’t helping with my mood. I decided to change to my R&B playlist. Next thing I know I’m passing cars on the expressway, blasting Ari Lennox’s “No Settling.”
I belted out the lyrics as I switched lanes. Which got me thinking, why do we settle when we know that we want more?
Although Ari talks about relationships in the song. It can apply to any other aspect of your life that you don’t want to settle in. You may find yourself waking up every day, doing your daily routine: getting ready for work, going to work, working, and finally leaving work. You end your night however you want.
Then you wake up and do it all over again. That you find yourself wanting more because you’re not happy or you could just want something different.
Sometimes you let the fear of the unknown control you. So, you end up settling for what you already know. If you want more, make a plan to get where you want to be in life. You can’t let the unknown get in the way of your now.
And once you get to where you do have more, you think it’s too good to be true. It could be because you never pushed yourself past your limits. You grow and find yourself changing that you don’t realize that you have been settling. Most importantly when you ask for change don’t think you don’t deserve it.
This isn’t the time to settle for where you are in life. We often ask for more because we’re unsatisfied with what we have. But when that opportunity comes, is it too good to be true crosses our mind too many times.
You may have gotten a new job, car, or even moved into a new place. In the moment of the good news, you’re excited. Then you have a minute to sit and think, “is it too good to be true?” It’s not, you may have underestimated yourself or got used to being in your comfort zone.
It’s time to step out of your comfort zone and believe in yourself. You get stuck in your comfort zones because you know the outcome. That’s when you hear Ari Lennox’s voice in the back of your mind reminding you not to settle.
You know that you want more, you can’t let your comfort zone hold you back. All the steps it took to get to where you are, let it guide you even further. Don’t forget to reap those benefits and embrace the change. It’s not too good to be true because it wouldn’t have happened if you weren’t ready.
Or maybe it did happen to prepare you for the next step so that you don’t get comfortable with where you are now.
So again, I ask, why settle when you know you want more?
